Xylexpo expects strong wood products show in 2012

leave a comment »

The wood and wood-based products tradeshow, Xylexpo 2012, is planned for May 8-12, at the Milan Exhibition Center in Milan, Italy. Show organizers say that despite a tough economy, Xylexpo tradeshow exhibitors are expected to cover a larger area than the previous show with the latest woodworking technologies.
“The global economic situation presents few signs of improvement and our industry can only reflect these difficulties,” said Paolo Zanibon, general manager of Xylexpo. “But, in spite of this, exhibitor registrations for the next Xylexpo are encouraging and, so far, they suggest we might achieve an area of 45 thousand square meters, i.e. 15-20 percent more space than in the previous edition.”
Zanibon said Xylexpo hopes to be a guide for visitors through the changing wood products market. According to Dario Corbetta, marketing manager for Xylexpo, the exhibition center’s halls one and three will be dedicated to panel processing technology, while halls five and seven may be opened to panel machining. Hall four will include “first operation” machines and technologies.
“For several months now, we have been working to spread the message that our exhibition will be the ideal place to meet the widest offer, to compare solutions and to understand what the global technology industry can provide,” Corbetta said. ”A strong message we are delivering to new and consolidated exhibitors first, but that we will start to spread also among visitors in a couple of weeks; visitors have always been a valuable resource for our exhibition, boasting very high rates of international attendance, around 50 percent.”

‘The Campus’ to showcase woodworking skills at AWFS Fair

with one comment

The Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers will debut “The Campus” at its 2011 AWFS Fair, which will be an area on the show floor focused on showcasing the skills of American woodworkers.
The Campus will have three distinct areas, all focused on industry skills and training opportunities: a WorldSkills cabinetmaking competition, the smartSHOP fully-operational cabinet shop and the Woodwork Career Alliance professional evaluations. WorldSkills, an international career technical education training organization, will host its three-day cabinetmaking qualifying trials. Students from countries around the world compete for gold medals, with trail winners chosen by SkillsUSA. Those chosen to represent the U.S. will compete in WorldSkills Germany in 2013. The smartSHOP, a fully operational cabinet shop on the exhibit floor, will showcase “Simplicity in Automation for the Small Shop.”
SmartSHOP will bring automation down to scale for the modest size shops, giving attendees the chance to ask questions and see machine demonstrations. The Woodwork Career Alliance of North America will debut the Woodwork Passport Credentialing program by offering live operational evaluations using the Woodwork Manufacturing Skill Standards. The Woodwork Passport is a portable, personal, permanent record of a woodworker’s level of competency in tool and machine operations, according to the Woodwork Career Alliance.

The view from Interwood Taiwan

leave a comment »

Interwood Taipei 2011is a major machinery exhibition held in Taiwan every three years. We asked Elli Tsailing Hung, project manager at the Taiwan Trade Center in Chicago, about the show and the current woodworking business environment in Taiwan.
“In general, Taiwan’s wood machinery focuses on customized products, the prices are reasonable compared to Europe and the States,” he told CabinetMakerFDM. “The manufacturers keep making improvements on key components and after-sale services. In addition, due to the limited resources of wood (available in Taiwan), they also put efforts on how to reuse materials.
“The Taiwanese woodworking machinery industry has a history of more than 40 years and now ranks No. 4 in the world for exports. Over the years, the industry has specialized in providing machinery for both production of mass-produced and customized wooden furniture, while adapting to changes in market demand,” Hung said.
Interwood, known as the Taipei International Woodworking Machinery and Supplies Show, is one of the three largest professional woodworking machinery exhibitions in Asia. The last exhibition in 2008 drew 182 exhibitors using 1,070 booths, and more than 3,800 domestic and international visitors. The number of buyers from Russia, Mexico and India grew sharply, according to Hung.

1105CMFinter2More than 180 companies are expected at the 2011 event, held every three years.
The United States has traditionally been the largest export market for Taiwan-made woodworking machinery, but China claimed the top export destination in 2010, according to the Taiwan Directorate General of Customs and Interwood Woodworking and Furniture Digest. In the 2008-2010 period, Hong Kong, Canada and Vietnam were also major export destinations.
According to Taiwan Economic News, the global downturn has reduced machinery exports. Woodworking equipment exports declined 13 percent in 2008 to $590 million. Machinery makers have focused on saving customer’s costs, developing non-woodworking machines using core technologies, and seeking smaller orders. Newer machines featured better control technology, higher output and accuracy.
Taiwan Trade Center’s Hung said that more than 180 companies are using 1,100 booths in the 2011. The show will be held July 7-10 at the TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall and features a full range of woodworking machinery related tools, parts and accessories, raw materials, and other related items. For more information email the show directly.
