Virginia Tech offering online forestry education courses

Virginia Tech is now offering online Wood Science and Forest Products Undergraduate Certificate and continuing education courses. 

The curriculum for the both the certificate and the continuing education courses offer a blend of manufacturing and marketing courses for professionals in the wood products industry.

The Lean Systems Certificate is designed to equip students with the tools to decrease system response time so their organizational production systems are able to immediately change and adapt to market demands. Apply here.  

Non-credit course offerings also are available for Continuing Education Units. Enroll here.

Masco Retail Cabinet Group receives environment award

Masco Retail Cabinet Group, the manufacturer of KraftMaid Cabinetry, recently became one of six organizations to be presented the Ohio Award for Outstanding Achievement in Environmental Stewardship.

Receiving the award for KraftMaid Cabinetry was Chris Winans, vice president of operations at Masco Retail Cabinet Group. “We’re honored and grateful to be recognized for our efforts in environmental responsibility and sustainability,” he said.

All KraftMaid Cabinetry plants operate under an environmental management system certified to ISO-14001:2004.

Combois holds 42nd annual meeting in Spain

Combois recently held its 42nd annual general meeting Bilbao, Spain.

Although most member countries suffered from the worldwide economic downturn, delegates reported that stabilization had occurred in almost all markets and that encouraging trends toward new technology investments were developing in many areas.

Combois was founded in 1967 with the mission to facilitate the exchange of woodworking technology and know-how among machinery suppliers from different countries and to raise the standards of customer service.

The 2010 annual general meeting will be held in Chicago and Grand Rapids, Mich., in September 2010.

American Wood Council launching new coalition

The American Wood Council recently approved the launch of its new coalition to provide an organizational structure for wood products companies and associations to work together to advance industry interests on building codes and standards, green building policy issues and federal and state environmental regulations affecting manufacturers. The coalition officially begins Jan. 1, 2010.

“The new coalition will ensure that wood products manufacturers have a broadly-supported, unified and powerful voice at the table so that we can secure a strong future for the wood products industry in the face of an onslaught of upcoming challenges,” said AWC’s Robert Glowinski.

AWC members elected new Officers of the Council, who will provide day-to-day operating guidance and strategic direction for the Oversight Board. The Board, comprised of all coalition members, will have ultimate authority for the governance and management of the coalition’s direction and finances. 

Elected as Officers of the Council:

  • Chairman: Marc Brinkmeyer, Idaho Forest Group
  • First Vice Chairman: Joe Patton, The Westervelt Company
  • Second Vice Chairman: Brian Luoma, Louisiana-Pacific Corporation
  • Immediate Past Chairman: Ray Tennison, Simpson Investment Company
  • Lumber: Adrian Blocker, West Fraser Inc.
  • Structural Panels: Fritz Mason, Georgia-Pacific LLC
  • Engineered Wood Products: Rob Taylor, Weyerhaeuser Company
  • Other Products: Andrew Miller, Stimson Lumber Company
  • Canadian Wood Council: Diana Blenkhorn, Maritime Lumber Bureau

The coalition has 47 supporting members representing 58 percent of U.S. lumber production, 71 percent of structural panel production, 62 percent of engineered wood products, and representation from Canadian wood products, according to the Council

Virginia Tech accepting forestry fellowship applications

Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources is accepting applications for a national urban forestry fellowship offered by the Garden Club of America and made possible through the donations of its Zone VI members, national membership and Casey Trees.

With this fellowship, the Garden Club of America seeks to forward its goal of advancing knowledge of urban forests and increasing the number of scientists in the relatively new field of urban forestry. A selection committee from Virginia Tech’s forestry department will include practicing urban forestry scientists and professionals in related fields to review applications, with the Garden Club of America endorsing their final selection.The fellowship is open to both advanced undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental studies or a closely related field at any four-year college or university degree program in the U.S. Recipients must be U.S. students who will be enrolled as juniors, seniors or graduate students during the fellowship period. The award is for $4,000 and recipients may apply for one additional year of funding.
