California wildfire destroys wood products mill, trees

leave a comment »

A wildfire in the afternoon on Sept. 15 quickly spread through the city of Weed in Northern California, burning more than 100 structures including a local wood products mill, and many trees.

As of late on Sept. 15, the Boles fire was already more than 400 acres and 0 percent contained, but had destroyed or damaged many structures including Roseburg Forest Products’ buildings, according to the California Department of Forestry.

“Black land. Very flat. A lot of trees burned, a lot of sad, scared folks,” state fire spokeswoman Susie Brady told the Associated Press.

Weed, historically a lumber town, was named after the founder of a mill, Abner Weed, who “discovered that the area’s strong winds were helpful in drying lumber,” according to the town’s website.
