Ashley Furniture details panel purchasing

leave a comment »

Chris Watt, global wood purchasing at Ashley Furniture Industries, discussed end-user preferences and influences of MDF and particleboard at the International Wood/Fiber-based Panels Conference 2015.

In his presentation, Watt said that purchasing decisions for panel products are reviewed on a continuous basis, and the decision process is categorized by quality, packaging, supply, transportation/warehousing and price.

Ashley maintains casegoods research and development at its headquarters and large manufacturing plant in Arcadia, Wisconsin. An upholstery research and development center is located at its Ecru, Mississippi, operation.

Ashley has 10 manufacturing sites, including China and Vietnam, and 30 percent of U.S. sales come from furniture made in the U.S.

Robots are becoming a larger investment for Ashley (the company’s drawer cells are all automated with robots), and 3-D printing processes are being tested for possible production roles. Watt said that Ashley uses the Deming model and Goldratt principals in its operation.

One bottleneck in the Ashley operations is in the router operations, Watt said. He would like to see 5/8-inch thick MDF that could be stamped, like in an automotive plant.

As far as panels, Watt said that Ashley purchases from 10 mills in North America. The company uses mostly MDF. Particleboard is not used extensively and is employed in thick tabletops and other applications that can be edgebanded.

Ashley supplies board suppliers with forecasts of expected needs, and every major producer maintains and auxiliary warehouse to supply Ashley. Most board is laminated with paper laminate, and the color of the panel is important because laminates used are so thin.

Furniture is shipped assembled, and Watt said that furniture is over-engineered to survive shipment.

Watt said that Ashley grew by 10 percent last year. Some manufacturing capacity has been moved from a large China operation to Vietnam, and to the United States, due to automation. Sewing kits are made in Vietnam and shipped as a large “sock,” which is fitted over an OSB frame made in the United States.

KBIS to highlight outdoor living at 2016 show

leave a comment »

As the demand for alfresco living reaches epic proportions, the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) will introduce a new outdoor products area at its 2016 show, January 19-21 in Las Vegas. The pavilion will showcase the latest in outdoor kitchen and living design trends, as well as showcase new outdoor products from more than 15 brands. Located in the South Hall of the Last Vegas Convention Center, the pavilion will also include expanded programming for attendees including panels and demonstrations.

“The outdoor appliance category has grown exponentially. It’s no longer about what grill are people buying for their backyard, it’s about bringing the entire kitchen experience outdoors,” said Brian Pagel, VP, kitchen and bath, Emerald Expositions. “Identified among the top 10 kitchen design trends for 2015 by the NKBA in their yearly Kitchen & Bath Style Report, outdoor kitchen and living spaces are among the hottest trends in the housing industry today.”

In the same report, about half of all NKBA designers specified an outdoor kitchen in 2014 – an increase of seven percentage points from 2013.

Among the highlights of the pavilion include an outdoor display with products and designs by: Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights, Caliber Appliances, Challenger Designs LLC, Open Air Outdoor Cabinetry by Desavino & Sons, Fontana Forni USA, Glideware, Grill Dome, Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, Liebherr, Louisiana Grills, Memphis Wood Fire Grills, Modern Home Products, New Age Products, Sunshine Stone Products, Overstock Stone, and Richelieu Hardware Ltd.

Bark beetle kills millions of trees in California

leave a comment »

Bark beetles, such as the Western Pine Bark Beetle, have combined with the drought to cause a massive tree die-off in California, prompting Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency, reports the Press Enterprise.

Brown has declared a state of emergency to help California address a bark beetle infestation that is killing tens of millions of trees, including many in Inland forests.

The governor sent a letter to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack seeking federal action for “the worst epidemic of tree mortality in its modern history.”

The tree die-off is exacerbated by four years of extreme drought conditions, which has left trees vulnerable to the native beetles.

The U.S. Forest Service estimates that more than 22 million trees have already died in California. Brown is asking the federal government for additional funding and help for private landowners to remove dead and dying trees.

A U.S. Forest Service survey released earlier this year found than 2 million trees have died in Southern California, half of them in the Los Padres National Forest north of Los Angeles, and that bark beetles are present in those forests.

Congressman recognizes North Cal Wood Products for sustainability efforts

leave a comment »

Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) has presented North Cal Wood Products of Ukiah, California with his Sustainable North Coast Certificate in recognition of its dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Since 1986, North Cal has engaged in sustainable business practices, reclaiming and re-purposing lumber and supplying sustainably-harvested timber products, the Ukiah Daily Journal reports.

“North Cal is leading the field in sustainable business practices and should be applauded for their dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability,” Huffman said. “North Cal’s culture of innovation and its commitment to providing living wage jobs promotes support for both the environment and its human caretakers. I thank them for their leadership and positive work.”

“I am appreciative of fact that Congressman Huffman took the time to recognize and appreciate that some of us in the building world are trying to recycle and re-use things that would end up in the landfill and just go to waste,” said Frank Vranken, owner, North Cal Wood Products.

The company has reclaimed and remanufactured millions of board feet of lumber, recycling up to 90 percent of materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. North Cal works with designers, architects and builders to provide reclaimed products to a wide range of commercial and residential projects, including Google, Facebook, and Twitter.

Xylexpo 2016 organizers expect successful expo

leave a comment »

Nearly 300 exhibitors have registered for the biennial furniture exhibition, Xylexpo.

Xylexpo 2016, the biennial international furniture and woodworking expo will be held May 24-28 at FieraMilano-Rho in Milan. So far, almost 300 exhibitors have registered with a 22 percent share of international companies.

“We expect at least 500 exhibitors, largely above the 440 result of 2014, while the exhibition area will be much wider than the 26, 176 square meters we covered two years ago,” said Lorenzo Primultini, president of the exhibition. “We are even more optimistic on the visitor side: in 2014 we recorded more than 44,000 accesses in five days, corresponding to 15,250 ‘unique visitors’ this year. Everything seems to suggest that we will do even better.”

“Our optimism is supported by several factors,” Primultini added. “First of all, our exhibition will represent the entire industry. All the leading actors of the industry will be in Milan, with no exception, and this is a major achievement, especially for our industry that in Milan − one of its traditional global capitals − will find all those who offer technology and innovation, make research and work to find new solutions to new problems, day after day. I am not referring only to big groups, to the fact that Barberan, Biesse, Cefla, Homag, Ima, Scm and Weinig are finally back to Milan, all together, but also to so many small and medium businesses from all over the world, which have been able to overcome these tough years with their innovative strength, their capacity to find creative solutions.”

OSHA cites Texas furniture manufacturer for safety violations

leave a comment »

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited MooreCo Inc., a Temple, Texas-based furniture manufacturer, for three repeated and six serious violations and placed the company in its Severe Violator Enforcement Program.

Proposed fines for MooreCo’s health and safety violations total $122,500, reports Staffing Industry Analysts.

According to OSHA, temporary workers assigned to MooreCo Inc. were seriously injured twice in 14 months when inadequately guarded machines pulled them in, removing skin from the wrist up to the shoulder in the most recent incident, and from the wrist down in an earlier incident. As a result of the earlier incident, the employee’s fingertips were also amputated.
