NSF International, BIFMA release new office storage products Product Category Rule

leave a comment »

NSF International and the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association have released a new Product Category Rule for office storage products. The PCR defines the science-based and internationally recognized method for reporting the environmental impact of office storage products such as casegoods, files, cabinets and other related products throughout their entire life cycle.

The PCR for office storage products explains how to conduct a life-cycle assessment (LCA) for office storage products and what to include in the resulting Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). LCAs measure inputs, outputs and environmental impacts of a storage product across its lifespan, and the EPD is the third-party-verified report that explains the data generated from a life-cycle assessment.

The office storage PCR was developed in accordance with international environmental management guidelines (ISO 14025) through the NSF National Center for Sustainability Standards, part of NSF International’s Sustainability Division.

“The development of Product Category Rules for storage products helps meet the increasing demand for transparency in environmental claims,” said Tom Bruursema, ceneral manager of NSF International’s Sustainability Division. “PCRs, LCAs and EPDs provide crucial information to help businesses and government agencies meet their greener purchasing goals and be ready for LEED.”

“We are pleased to partner with NSF International on behalf of our members to develop PCRs for the storage industry so that they may report on their cutting-edge sustainability efforts. PCRs will help move the contract furniture industry toward a more sustainable future,” said Thomas Reardon, executive director of BIFMA. “This PCR for office storage products is our second PCR as we previously developed one for office seating.”

BIFMA joins new Sustainable Purchasing Council as strategic partner

leave a comment »

The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association announced that it joined the Sustainable Purchasing Council as a strategic partner. The SPC is a new organization developed as a collaborative effort to harness the power of institutional purchasing for greater sustainability achievements.

The SPC will interface regularly with its partners to identify opportunities for collaboration and added value. It does not seek to duplicate any of the functions of existing groups but will inform a systemic approach to institutional and corporate sustainable purchasing practices.

“We have high hopes for the clarity that the SPC will bring to the marketplace,” said Brad Miller, BIFMA’s director of advocacy and communications. “BIFMA is proud to see this entity emerge as the outgrowth of work done in prior years by the Keystone Group and Green Products Roundtable. The SPC will help everyone trying to make the best choices with their purchasing decisions.”

Miller served on the Green Products Roundtable and believes that the time is right to coordinate and stabilize the sustainability frontier. “As organizations find it necessary to spend their limited dollars wisely, it is critical to bring all of the great environmental and sustainability assessment systems together for a better understanding of each program’s strengths,” he said.

The Sustainable Purchasing Council will publicly launch during a webcast event on July 23, followed by a Founding Summit in late August or early September in Washington, D.C. The Summit will be an in-person, decision-making meeting open to founders and partners. BIFMA will participate at the Summit as a founding partner. Learn more at http://www.purchasingcouncil.org.

BIFMA updates G1-2013 Ergonomics Guidelines for office furniture

leave a comment »

The Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (www.bifma.org) released an updated G1-2013 Ergonomics Guideline, which provides dimensional guidance to office furniture manufacturers in the development, design and specification of ergonomic solutions for computer workspaces in North America.

BIFMA began the revision of BIFMA G1-2002 in 2009, using new civilian anthropometric data. The new data reflect changes in the size and shape of the North American working population, resulting in a number of G1-recommended dimensional and adjustment range changes.

The dimensional changes included increased seat width, distance between armrests, support surface height for sitting and standing, and height clearance for legs and knees.

BIFMA is also developing a Heavy Occupant Chair Standard. The standard will cover office (and possibly lounge) chairs with 253 to 400 lbs. as the basis for the tests. This standard will pick up where the X5.1 Seating Standard (up to 253 lbs./95th percentile male) leaves off regarding user weights.

Indiana Furniture achieves BIFMA level 2 for casegoods products

leave a comment »

Indiana Furniture has achieved the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association’s level 2 certification for all casegoods, tables and seating products. The level certification ensures Indiana Furniture is using sustainable practices while sourcing responsible materials and defining end-of-lifecycle measures that are less harmful to the environment.

Casegoods from Indiana Furniture were previously level 2 certified while seating was level 1. After achieving FSC CoC certification in 2012, the company added methods to monitor and control water usage in the manufacturing facility, formalized a chemical management plan of action for emergency response, and converted up to 20 percent of energy used in the manufacturing facility to green certified renewable energy. Indiana Furniture used the third-party certifier Intertek to verify it met criteria for level 2 certification.

Indiana Furniture’s level 2 certified products can be found on the level website: http://levelcertified.org/products/?man=317.

ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard revised

leave a comment »

The ANSI/BIFMA e3-2012 Furniture Sustainability Standard has been revised to include an additional point for furniture products that meet a new, lower formaldehyde emissions limit.

The e3 Standard provides a means of measuring environmental and social attributes of furniture products and constitutes the technical criteria of the level product certification program.

Modeled after the LEED rating system, the e3 standard includes six prerequisites and numerous optional credit criteria. As a product is determined to conform to the various optional criteria, points are accumulated toward an ultimate score and corresponding conformance tier. A minimum of 32 points (of the 91 total now available) must be achieved in order to reach the first conformance threshold.

Contact BIFMA for copies of the standard at email@bifma.org or 616.285.3963. Standards can also be ordered online at the BIFMA website: https://bifma.org/secure/orderform.html.
