KCMA releases kitchen, bath wood-based cabinet market size research

leave a comment »

The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association released results of its market research project, which found the total kitchen and bath cabinet market to be worth $6.997 billion in the U.S., wood-based residential cabinet market for the year ending 2010.
The study combined information from existing KCMA member companies and other third-party sources, such as trade magazine reports, government data and industry association data. A KCMA Task Force comprised of industry marketing experts reviewed 2009 data from each of the independent sources to produce a market size estimate for 2009. The 2009 data was selected because it represented a complete data set from each of the sources noted above for that fiscal year.
“Lacking a perfect, single source, we believe that this methodology and definition of the market size provides the most timely and best estimate for the U.S., wood-based, residential cabinet market,” said KCMA president, Greg Stoner.
The Task Force then used the KCMA monthly “Trend of Business” report of 82 companies to calculate a market change percentage from 2009 to 2010. KCMA’s TOB report includes data from 82 reporting companies of varying size and geographic distribution. It serves as a strong proxy for the broader residential wood kitchen and bath market. The TOB measures monthly and year-to-date change of the current year versus prior year. Nearly half of the participating companies reported annual sales of $10 million or less, with 11 percent reporting sales exceeding $100 million.
“While we realize that there is never a definitive or perfect market sizing study, in our estimation, this approach represents a sound and reasonable method for our industry as defined. We chose to narrow the focus to ‘residential, wood-based’ cabinets as a more focused view of the market we represent. At the same time we recognize that there is a non-residential market as well as a cabinet market that is produced via other materials (most notably steel),” Stoner said.

KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program mandates CARB-compliant materials

leave a comment »

The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association Board of Directors approved measures to strengthen and clarify requirements for companies to attain Environmental Stewardship Program certification at its November meeting. The new KCMA ESP 04-11 criteria will become effective Jan. 1, 2011. Changes include: the mandatory use of CARB ATCM compliant low formaldehyde emitting particleboard, hardwood plywood and MDF panel products; increased number of points allotted for the use of solid wood and plywood products certified through a recognized sustainable forestry program; and additional points for companies offering chain-of-custody sustainable forestry certification on at least one line of cabinetry.
“By re-evaluating these specifications each year, we ensure that ESP maintains its credibility by keeping up with the latest technology, changes in industry standards and new federal, state regulations,” said Dick Titus, executive vice president of KCMA.
ESP continues to encourage increased use of low-formaldehyde-emitting materials in cabinetry. Beginning January 2011, 80% of all panel purchases (particleboard, MDF, thin MDF and hardwood plywood) must comply with CARB ATCM formaldehyde emission limits. All such products must be certified by CARB approved third-party certifiers to quality.
To protect the forests and ensure the future availability of lumber resources, ESP now will double the credit points awarded in the Product Resource category for the use of hardwood and softwood lumber, and hardwood and softwood plywood that has been certified through a recognized sustainable forestry program.
In an addition to the program, points now will be awarded in the Product Resource Category for cabinet manufacturers who have received Chain-of-Custody certification through a recognized sustainable forestry program and can offer this COC certification on at least one product line or offer it as an order option for those purchasing cabinets.
ESP-certified cabinets can be identified by the ESP seal, located on sink base and vanity base of all certified lines. See a complete list of ESP-certified manufacturers and learn more about the program.
The ESP, started in 2006, encourages a holistic approach to environmental stewardship, awarding points for low-formaldehyde emitting materials, raw material sourcing, setting standards for manufacturing processes which protect the environment and making a positive difference in communities. To be certified, applicants must earn points in each of five ESP categories: Air Quality, Product Resource Management, Process Resource Management, Environmental Stewardship and Community Relations. More than 140 companies/brands are ESP certified.
