Rockler Companies Inc., a retailer and manufacturer of woodworking and do-it-yourself equipment and supplies, has named Ron Hornbaker, a seasoned retail and operations executive, as its new CEO.

“I am honored to join Rockler, a company rich in both heritage and reputation,” said Hornbaker. “Rockler has over 61 years of experience helping woodworkers of all skill levels build furniture, cabinetry and other hand-crafted items. That brings brand authenticity that is rare to find these days. Rockler to support Minneapolis Maker Faire

leave a comment »

The company will focus on giving local middle school students hands-on experience with woodworking tools and machinery.

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has announced its support of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Mini Maker Faire on May 29-30 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The Maker Faire is a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness; a celebration of the maker movement.  It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning. Attendees will find arts and crafts, science and engineering, food and music – all in a family-friendly, hands-on environment. On Friday, May 29, a special “Education Day” will reach over 1,000 middle school students from local schools.

“We’re truly thrilled to get involved with the Minneapolis/St. Paul Mini Maker Faire,” says Scott Ekman, Rockler’s vice president of marketing. “We’re especially excited about ‘Education Day’ because we’ll be able to show kids who might not otherwise be exposed to woodworking, how to make some pretty cool things using wood.”

Rockler will host three hands-on learning stations on both days of the Faire:

  • Woodworking hand tool station: children and adults will be able to use various woodworking tools.
  • Turning station:  Rockler will provide lathes and instruction to both demonstrate and guide attendees.
  • CNC station:  kids can cut designs or simple patterns, and see their initials carved.

Partnership with Hardwood Forestry Fund to Benefit Indiana and Ohio forests.

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware’s partnership with the Hardwood Forestry Fund will result in the planting of 10,000 trees this spring. The Earth Day effort involves two separate planting projects – one in northwestern Indiana and another in southeastern Ohio.

Planting in Indiana

This planting will take place in May on an eight acre portion of a site called the Doak Property, located in northwestern Indiana and managed by Purdue University. It will feature several hardwood species including Black Walnut, Cherry, Northern Red Oak and White Oak with softwood nurse trees interspersed to optimize the health and growth of all 5,000 trees planted.

Planting in Ohio

A selection of 5,000 trees including hardwood species such as Northern Red Oak, White Oak and Black Walnut will be planted this spring on a ten acre parcel of the Gifford State Forest in Athens County, Ohio. The land is managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and is part of their ongoing sustainable forest regeneration effort.

Both planting sites are open to the public and promote education and awareness of the sustainability of forested land. Visits by local schools and the general public number in the thousands annually.

“We are very pleased to work with the Hardwood Forestry Fund to plant thousands of trees as a celebration of Earth Day and sustainable hardwood forests,” says Scott Ekman, Rockler’s vice president of marketing. “The life cycle of these trees will continually provide valuable hardwoods for up and coming generations of woodworkers.”

leave a comment »

Minnesota-based Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has expanded its selection of CNC machines, adding four new AutoRoute models manufactured by Axiom Precision. These premium CNC machines are ideal for users looking to upgrade from an entry-level machine or those entering the field who immediately require top-quality precision.

“Axiom AutoRoute CNC machines are built for remarkable precision,” says Steve Krohmer, vice president of product marketing at Rockler. “From intricate carvings to musical instruments, these routing machines produce jaw-dropping results.”

Rockler will carry four AutoRoute models (4 Basic, 4 Pro, 6, and 8 Pro) that feature different working area capacities (ranging from the 24″ x 24″ AutoRoute 4 Basic to the 24″ x 48″ AutoRoute 8 Pro.) Each Axiom AutoRoute features precision ball screws, rigid steel frames, and interlocking aluminum tables which are compatible with T-track accessories. The machines require operating software and drivers which are sold separately. An onboard USB port allows users to input their operating programs with a flash drive, which means the CNC doesn’t need to be tethered to a computer.

Axiom CNCs are priced starting at $3,999.00 and can be ordered at www.rockler.com.

New Rockler article gives tips on saw blade selection

leave a comment »

To help woodworkers navigate the choices of saw blades and understand the variables that affect cut quality, Rockler has created an article titled “Saw Blades 101” for the “How-to” section of Rockler.com. The article (http://www.rockler.com/how-to/blades-101) explains the basics of saw blade anatomy, discusses differences in blade types and provides a list of questions that woodworkers can answer to focus their search for the best blade for their shop and situation.

“We’re always surprised to find that some woodworkers use the same blade on their table saw as on their miter saw and don’t realize that they could be getting better results,” said Scott Ekman, Rockler’s vice president of marketing and e-commerce. “If we can help walk them through the different types of blades, they’ll be in a better position to choose the best solution for their individual needs. We see providing informative, useful how-to content as another way we can serve our customers and contribute to their success.”

Two shorter articles also accompany “Saw Blades 101,” which focus on choosing blades for table saws and miter saws (http://www.rockler.com/how-to/buying-table-blade/ and http://www.rockler.com/how-to/buying-miter-blade/).

Rockler wants woodworkers to help celebrate 60 years in the industry

leave a comment »

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware is reaching out to woodworkers to help celebrate 60 years in the woodworking business.

Since being founded in 1954, the company says it has focused on being a leader in woodworking innovation, skillbuilding and learning resources, and providing the best possible customer service. The company was founded by Nordy Rockler as Minnesota Woodworkers Supply Co. in a garage in north Minneapolis, and has expanded over the last 60 years from its origins as a small, mail-order business.

To help celebrate 60 years of woodworking history, Rockler is inviting woodworkers to submit their favorite stories and photos. Ideas for types of stories to submit include favorite memories in the shop, memorable triumphs or mishaps, lessons learned through woodworking and favorite or most meaningful projects. Submissions should be sent to celebrate60@rockler.com. A collection of customer stories will be featured at Rockler.com/celebrate-60, and authors of the stories chosen to be featured will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Rockler Gift Card.

“We are proud to reflect on 60 years in the woodworking industry, but the Rockler story is not just about the company,” says Scott Ekman, Rockler’s Vice President of Marketing. “It’s about generations of woodworkers who have created special memories through their projects. Woodworkers, and our customers in particular, are at the center of everything we do. We look forward to celebrating their stories which represent the heart and soul of woodworking.”

leave a comment »

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware in Sandy Springs, Georgia, is expanding in a new, 10,000-square-foot location. The company is adding a state-of-the-art demonstration and learning center, as well as many new product lines, including metal working.

Though an official grand opening is scheduled for later in 2014, the new location will be open beginning Tuesday, July 29. The new location’s address and phone number are: 6690 Roswell Road, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 and 404.460.1000.

“The new store reflects a huge resurgence in home woodworking, both basic and advanced,” says Mike Dugan, Rockler vice president & general manager of retail. “People are tackling more home improvement projects themselves and are discovering that, with a little guidance, they are actually very capable and talented.”

The new store was developed in coordination with both customers and associates. It will feature expanded product selections in various categories including turning, power tools, finishing, hardware and a new metalworking product line. The highlight will be a large, glass-enclosed demonstration area in the middle of the store.

“Woodworking can be intimidating, and our top priority is to ensure that store visitors have the skills as well as the tools necessary to complete their job. The new workshop facility gives us that ability,” says Dugan.
