leave a comment »

At an upcoming awards banquet, the Maine Wood Products Association (MWPA) will present its “Pine Tree Award” to Pride Manufacturing Co. of Burnham, Maine and its “Pine Cone Award” to Longleaf Lumber Inc. and its manufacturing facility in Berwick, Maine.

Manufacturing jobs in the U.S., and a focus on sustainable materials helped the companies earn their respective awards.

“The awards announcement and the celebration dinner is an exciting time for MWPA because it allows us to showcase the creativity and innovative spirit of both larger and small member companies alike,” said Kris Cornish, executive director of MWPA.

The Pine Tree Award is designated for a mid-sized to large company while the Pine Cone Award is given to a smaller company.

The awards will be presented at a banquet on July 21 at the Waterville Elks Club.

Doug Fletcher, president of Maine Wood Concepts, said: “Being innovative is important for wood products companies in Maine, in order to effectively compete in what has become a global marketplace. We think it is important to shine a light on innovative companies, to serve as models for the industry.”

International Paper’s John Faraci named 2014 North American CEO of the Year

leave a comment »

John V. Faraci, CEO of International Paper, was named 2014 North American CEO of the Year by RISI, the information provider for the global forest products industry. The award will be presented to Faraci at the 29th Annual RISI North American Forest Products Outlook Conference.

Faraci was nominated by a group of investment analysts and portfolio managers covering the North American and global pulp and paper industry. The criteria for nomination include leadership, vision and strategic accomplishment.

IP’s growth under Faraci’s leadership has seen the company become a world leader in containerboard production as well as a major player in market pulp and coated paperboard, according to analysts. Faced with declining demand in the graphic paper market, IP shut down the 950,000-ton/year white paper mill in Courtland, Alabama. Labor peace in the U.S. has also been secured with a six-year master agreement with the United Steel Workers signed in 2014 covering 18 mills and more than 6,000 workers.

“As Faraci is retiring this year, he deserves wholehearted recognition for what he has done to turn IP around,” an analyst commented.

Faraci has been chairman and CEO of International Paper since November 2003 and is expected to retire in March 2015. In 2003, he was elected president of International Paper, and he previously served as executive vice president and chief financial officer from 2000 to 2003. From 1999 to 2000, he was senior vice president – finance and chief financial officer.

The RISI (www.risi.com) North American Forest Products Conference will be held in Boston on Oct. 8, 2014.

Grass Vionaro system honored with Red Dot Design Award

leave a comment »

Grass was recently presented the Red Dot Design Award for its cubist drawer system, Grass Vionaro.

This design solution for living areas and kitchen storage impressed judges with its minimalist overall system design. This is the fourth time that the movement systems company won the international design prize.

The jury, made up of 40 design professionals from 25 nations, praised several features of the Vionaro drawer system: its functionality, innovation, formal quality and ecological compatibility, as well as its slim drawer side that only measures 13 mm. The drawer sides, available with a height of up to 185 mm, are available in either aluminium or steel.

“The latest studies on the future developments in furniture design were used as the basis for the design of Vionaro, that does full justice to the trend towards minimalism in all respects,” said Ronald Weber, chairman of the Grass executive board. “It is very important for us to combine functionality and design on the highest level in our products. This succeeded really well with the very slim, fully joint-free Vionaro drawer side. Both aluminium and steel Vionaro versions can be mounted on the same slide system as a wooden drawer, which has great additional benefits for customers, as they are able to offer completely different price or design lines with one single slide.”
