Stiles Machinery is helping deserving woodworking teachers and passionate students put a brand new machine in their shop classroom. Stiles is currently hosting a nationwide video contest called “What Will Your Teacher Do for a FREE Woodworking Machine?”

Students are encouraged to create a short video with their woodworking teacher, demonstrating whatever crazy and creative (but safe) stunt they are willing to do to for a free machinery upgrade. Participation is open to all secondary and post-secondary woodworking schools and educational institutions. The contest is part of a campaign celebrating Stiles’ 50th anniversary this year.

“As we celebrate our anniversary this year and honor our past 50 years, we also look ahead to our next 50 and the next generation of our industry. Investing in the future of our industry has always been a mission of Stiles, and because of this we’re looking to give some aspiring woodworking students the chance to win a new machine for their school’s shop,” explains Chris Dolbow, marketing manager for Stiles.

Video submissions are due by May 31. A panel of judges will choose up to three winners depending on the number of submissions received. The grand prize includes the choice of an Ironwood FX750 Spindle Shaper, Ironwood JT300 Jointer, Ironwood CUT18 Cut Off Saw or an Ironwood BR23 Boring Machine.

WoodWorks 2015 Wood Design Awards winners announced

leave a comment »

WoodWorks, an initiative of the Wood Products Council – a body that strives to promote the benefits of building with wood – recently announced the 16 winners of its 2015 Wood Design Awards. The event offers an opportunity to judge the current state of new and recently-built wooden buildings in the U.S.

The winners were split over nine categories on the regional and national level. More important than any one project is that taken as a whole, they demonstrate the versatility of building with wood, and its suitability for even large-scale projects.

The winner of the Institutional Wood Design category, Jackson Hole Airport, in Jackson, Wyoming, stands out from the crowd both for its extensive use of exposed timber, and its sustainability, as evidenced by its LEED Silver certification. Designed by Californian architecture firm Gensler, the first phase of the 115,500 square foot project was completed in 2010, and the second stage is still in progress.

The airport features low-flow plumbing fixtures, the use of recycled materials, and Forest Stewardship Council-certified timber. The extensive use of heavy timber met the required fire performance. The airport primarily features solid Douglas fir columns and glued laminated timber beams, which are joined together with steel fittings.
